I think we need to discuss good Japanese music, and the severe decrement of it. I'm not talking about the traditional arts, like Taiko and Shamisen, but where is the good commercial music? Has anyone got any good band/artist/DJ suggestions, from dance and electronica to indie rock and metal, just as long as it isn't pants. And if you're a SMAP fan please convince me why... 2007-11-20 14:25:40
hey man, do you know boris? i totally recommend their album PINK. it is like manic depressive black sabbath - one minute thrashing/punky/nirvana and the next 7 minutes of drone. they also did an album called rainbow, with kurihara, the guitarist from ghost, another excellent japanese band. rainbow is psychy, shoe gazery prettiness for the most part with one song that burns. both are good. ghost is a kind of psych folk band that has been around about 15 years. they have covered CAN, the stones, cream, syd barret, some unknown american garage band from the 60s, etc. that should explain what they are like, esp. the CAN and syd influence. sometimes kurihara plays with damon and naomi of galaxie 500 fame. ghost is on the drag city label from the states. not sure about boris. as for electronica there is this band called firo that is from kyoto. their album velvet tiny globe is real chill without being boring - moves a little faster than boards of canada, not quite as piano-y pretty as four tet, but inhabits the same world i think. label is called ryoondo tea, and their albums can readily be bought at parallax records, which is in the same building as cafe independents. need directions let me know. by the way, parallax is a great place if you are into electronica/avant garde jazz, improv, ect. also carry some post rock, brasilia, and other stuff. check it out! always good stuff i've never heard off . . . 2007-11-20 15:22:41
That's a great tip dude. I checked out Firo online and the reviews sound pretty good. I'm farmiliar with independants but never explored that building. How are the prices? Is experimentation costly? 2007-11-21 12:18:08
Does Utada Hikaru count, or is she too J-Pop? 2007-11-21 14:32:00
parallax is a bit expensive - i think i paid 2800 for firo, w/ out any bonus tracks. but because a lot of the stock seems like it might be european or rare, it's worth it. if you speak japanese the lady who works there make some good recommendations too. 2007-11-22 08:09:43
Hey dude. many thanks for the tip on parralax. Got the Ryoondo tea selected the other day. Very ambient eh? Good background music though. And that shop (although tricky to find) is a little gold mine. 2007-12-07 13:25:29
