It is kind of sad. The sense of community has disappeared from Kyoto along with the JET Programme. The same kind of thing is probably happening all over the country.

not a bad acronymn. I don't feel I have all that much to contribute though. I'm finished with the culture, aside from an occasional book or anime; I'm finished with the language, unless I didn't get 1-kyuu this time which is unlikely; and I'm finished with complaining about random aspects of living here that people find frustrating in their first 3 or so years.  What else do people talk about on these forums?

I wouldn't say it's overrated, but after you've seen the main sights and traveled around the country a bit, you get diminishing returns on any kind of aesthetic enjoyment of it.
